Abstract

Perinatal losses represent a significant trauma for women, the inadequate processing of which is associated with a number of short- and long-term negative effects. The aim of the study is to assess whether women who experienced fetal death received adequate mental support from professionals and the social environment, and whether complicated grief appeared in their cases.

Seven women who experienced perinatal loss participated in the study. With the help of a semi-structured in-depth interview, the experience of the losses and the perceived professional and social support were retrospectively explored. The data analysis was done using the method of content analysis.

According to the results of the investigation, professional psychological support was not provided during care for the mothers who experienced the loss. Social support was not able to provide sufficient support in all cases, and in several cases, communication barriers evolve in the couple relationship and in other social relationships. Several interviewees mentioned negative experiences regarding their health care. In one case, serious complicated grief could be determined, which was not processed until years later.

The present study draws attention to the importance of mental health support for women who have experienced a perinatal loss, as well as to the sensitization of those working in the obstetrics and gynecology department.
